Quansight Is Now a Public Benefit Corporation

We’re very excited to share a major milestone in Quansight’s journey: We have officially transitioned from a Limited Liability Company (LLC) to a Public Benefit Corporation (PBC). This change reflects and strengthens our commitment to ensuring that community-driven open source projects and their communities are sustainable now and for the long term. For the past seven years, we’ve worked on supporting open source projects through collaborations with organizations, big and small, that rely on the open source ecosystem. Quansight’s not-for-profit Labs division has been laser-focused on open source sustainability, with our team directly contributing to 40+ open source projects over the past year, and supporting several more projects through mentorship programs and the recent Open Source Fund.

Why a Public Benefit Corporation?

A PBC is a for-profit company legally required to balance financial success with a positive public impact, unlike traditional corporations where profit is prioritized above all else. Additionally, a PBC embeds its mission into its legal structure.

For Quansight, this means:

  • Our success is measured not just by revenue or profit, but also by our contributions to the open source ecosystem at large.
  • We can scale initiatives aimed at supporting critical OSS projects and OSS sustainability while maintaining financial viability.
  • Our core values: collaboration, inclusiveness, transparency, and equity are now codified in our corporate charter, ensuring a stronger alignment across all of our initiatives.

Organizational Changes

Quansight LLC had two divisions working in tandem: the for-profit data science Consulting, and the not-for-profit Labs.

The Labs division is evolving into Quansight PBC. Former Labs co-directors continue to lead Quansight PBC by transitioning into CEOs: Ralf Gommers as CEO, Technology, and Tania Allard as CEO, Impact. Ashley Baal, COO, is continuing as a member of the leadership team. Founder and former CEO, Travis Oliphant, is joining the Quansight PBC Board. The AI Consulting division is being acquired by OpenTeams, a partner organization also founded by Travis Oliphant. Former CTO at Quansight, Dharhas Pothina, is joining the OpenTeams leadership team as their CTO.
